If you consider yourself a gambler, you need to beware of the gambler’s fallacy. As one might expect, this fallacy can be the ruin of many a gambler, and it is based on a principle that many think is obviously true, when in fact, it could not be more false.
Gambler’s Fallacy Explained Did you ever imagine a certain outcome was “due?” If you flipped a fair coin 10 times in a row and it came up heads every time, what odds would you give against the next flip coming up heads as well? If you said anything but 1-1, you have fallen victim to the gambler’s fallacy. It is the belief that past outcomes have an effect on future outcomes. The odds against a fair coin coming up heads 11 times in a row are astronomical, but the coin has no memory, so that once 10 heads appear, the odds of the 11th head appearing are still 50-50.
